Dear All,
I can’t believe how fast this year is going by! The holiday season officially starts next week, and I am still in summer mode in my mind.
Well…there is lots going on and more to get ready for before 2023. There are big changes coming your way if you do implants or grafts prior to implants, if you see patients in the hospital (the E&M inpatient codes have been updated) and, if you do accept Medicare and treat Medicare patients, the coverage is expanding as of 2023 for traditional Medicare products.
Last time I wrote about the new CDT codes coming up for 2023. There are major changes to the tissue grafting codes; we will no longer be reporting D4266 or D4267 for membranes associated with edentulous areas or implants. The code will be reported for tissue membranes around NATURAL teeth. Be on the lookout for updated fee schedules from your carriers so you can see what the reimbursement will look like for these codes. Also, make sure when you are doing treatment plans, etc. that for services provided after 1/1/23 the new codes are reported.
CPT codes for inpatient E&M services have been updated as well. Just like outpatient visits moved to choosing the code based on medical decision making or time, the inpatient and emergency codes have moved to a similar model. To clarify, emergency room E&M codes do not have a time allocated to them and use medical decision making only. Here are the updated codes and level of decision making and time for your review.

Last but not least, CMS has been really busy updating their coverage guidelines. You can read the details from the ADA here
Well, that’s a lot to digest prior to Turkey Day! Enjoy your time with family and friends. I will be in touch again before the end of the year.
In the meantime, Keep Calm and Code On!
